POTENTIAL HYDRO-LOCKING

I dont want any oppos to lose a motor, so take a look and see if your car applies, and what you can/need to do about it.

Your best solution is to buy a real VW, you know, with an air cooled engine.

should say mark VI TDI in the title, other TDI owners have other things to worry about

A while back while considering purchasing one, I saw some sort of map. I think they are affected as well. The report rate seemed a great deal lower, but it still existed. I assume the lower report rate was due to the "relatively" low amount of A3 TDIs sold nationwide.

I'll try and find this map (it was done on gmaps). I believe the frozen interooler hydrolocking most frequently occured in humid environments that experienced frequent fluctuations in temperature (think midwestern states near bodies of water of rivers).

Thanks for the info, I work on a lot of these things. Although we don't have winter. I wonder if a very small drain hole in the lower intercooler end tank would help, as Volvo has done?

Yes, though Audi would have to release their own bulletin.

I looked long and hard at a new TDI last year. But living in Vermont, I was definitely worried about reports of engine damage due to intercooler icing and condensation.

the weird thing is, this is the VERY first time i've heard about it...

I've had our A3 TDI for 5 years now. EGR valve had some work done to it (twice...once at 60, once at 120K)

So IDK.....

sounds like toronto.....but i've never heard about this issue...weird. and our car is 75K miles on it, so its a little concerning...

Yeah, it took my some digging to find it a year ago. With regard to the prevalence, it is hard to say how common it is. There are always those people who have their car taken to a dealer. I feel there is always a certain amount of under reporting in certain issues. Obviously, something like this, when there has been TSB is always cause for concern. Good luck!

I think this is blown out of proportion a bit...the issue is two years old, and this is the first time I've heard of it, and one of my best friends has a Mark VI Jetta TDI wagon.

Well, the intercooler problem thread that's linked here goes back to Feb. 2012. I remember I ran across the intercooler stuff probably in 2013, while digging into concerns about catastrophic failure of the TDI's high pressure fuel pump (HPFP).

The intercooler issue seemed like a deal where you had to be a bit unlucky. That is, you needed just the wrong mix of temperature fluctuation, humidity and driving profile to create enough condensation to invite hydrolock.

this is the first i'm hearing about it too...but rather let the guys who own one know about it then for them to wake up one morning with a hydro-locked motor

I find it intresting thats its only on the MK 6 VW golfs... (the JSW is a golf, dont lie to yourself) and NOT on the Audi A3 tdi, which is more or less identical.

I never lied to myself... I knew that from the beginning (In Europe it's called the Golf Variant)

A3 TDI had a different Intercooler I think (and a different emission system)

If I did an EGR delete that would solve the whole problem!

Did it? i know the passet had one because its a bigger engine bay....I thought the A3 would be identical....huh. #themoreyouknow
